Chiropractic care has constantly evolved and improved in the past century-plus to ensure that people get the very best care available to live a long and healthy life. Here’s a look at the history of the holistic, non-invasive and whole body approach to wellness and health that we know as chiropractic care.
The Origins and History of Chiropractic Care
Dr. D.D. Palmer performed the very first spinal adjustment on record in 1895. His son Dr. B.J. Palmer was known as the developer of chiropractic. He helped guide the profession to where it stands today, which is the largest, drugless healing profession in the world.
Dr. D.D. Palmer’s daughter-in-law, Mabel Heath Palmer, became the first female chiropractor in 1905. Her son David Daniel Palmer continued to carry the chiropractic legacy forward. The Palmer School of Chiropractic was founded in 1897 and helped to pave the way for many new chiropractors to learn their science and practice the art of adjusting. Today, dozens of chiropractic schools exist across the United States.
Clarence Selmer Gonstead — (1898-1978) Inventor of the Gonstead Method
Dr. Clarence Gonstead made chiropractic practice into an understandable biomechanical science. His life was dedicated to clinical competency. With a gift of solving mechanical problems, he developed his own ideas on subluxations, x-ray, and adjusting bones through the empirical data he gathered from his large practice. With the adoption of the Gonstead technique by Palmer School of Chiropractic in the early 1960s, his technique assisted the profession in restoring chiropractic to its full-spine roots.
The Evolution of Chiropractic Care
Over the past 120-plus years, chiropractic care has continually evolved and grown as our knowledge of the human body has improved. The core concept, however, has always remained the same: the human body is an incredible machine capable of astounding self-healing. It just needs help on occasion to correct interferences to its natural systems.
